Camping Con 2016: Outside Public History will examine issues related to historic and contemporary practices of historical dialogue as it took/takes place in outdoor leisure spaces. Suggested topics include (but are not limited to):

●     Visitor studies related to historical engagement in parks, campgrounds, and other outdoor leisure spaces

●     The history, architecture, preservation, or material culture of camping and outdoor leisure

●     Connections among environmental, tourism, and public histories

●     Analyses of interpretive techniques—contemporary or historic—employed in outdoor settings

●     Contemporary and historical roles of the National Park Service and state parks in historical learning

We encourage presenters to consider alternative and creative forms of presentation that make the most of the park setting: research presented as walk-and-talks along trails, tours of park features from unique ideological and historical perspectives, structured conversations, campfire stories, or the traditional panel adapted to an outdoor setting. Presenters do not have to be experts on the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to conduct a walk or tour; presentations that make the most of place can examine, for example, physical features of parks in general, visitor behaviors on walking tours, or the history of tour guides in any location.

To propose a presentation, send a title, a 150-word description, and complete presenter contact information to NCPHcampingcon@gmail.com before 5:00pm on May 15, 2016.
